the role of meds in our treatment
Depression is a serious condition that affects up to a third of the London population at some period of their life. One only has to look at the latest statistics for the prescription of anti-depressants to appreciate how widespread this problem is. Using our holistic approach, Reflections accepts and agrees with using medication if and when appropriate. We have our own Doctor and Psychiatrist who will prescribe anti-depressant medicine when clinically indicated. Indeed , an individual might well be told at the end of an assessment to go to a doctor or psychiatrist, (either their own or - if they prefer - Reflection’s in-house doctor).
However, although medication is often useful, at Reflections we believe that most of the time it is a short-term first aid that addresses the symptoms but not the causes of depression. (There is a small minority of people in whom depression is an almost purely biological condition and for them it might be necessary to take long term medication in the same way that a person with diabetes might need to take insulin. This diagnosis will of course be made in conjunction with doctors and psychiatrists.)
At Reflections we work with our clients to address the core roots of depression and for the large majority of our clientele, we would hope to help them reach a level where they would not need to take any medication. |
